Left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh has downplayed concerns about India’s long tail after their unexpected loss in the first T20I against the West Indies. Following a close match where India fell short by four runs, questions arose about the team’s batting order, with specialist batters only going up to No.6, and Axar Patel, a left-arm spinner, occupying the No.7 spot. However, Arshdeep remained unfazed, stating that such discussions often arise after a defeat and that the team had confidence in their playing XI, whether it consisted of six bowlers or nine.
Despite the loss, Arshdeep tried to contribute with the bat and nearly took India home with a quickfire 12 runs off seven balls. Reflecting on the match, he pointed out the need for a batter to stay until the end, especially in situations when the fielding side brings in more fielders to prevent boundaries.
Looking ahead, Arshdeep emphasized that the team would review the match and identify areas for improvement, both in their bowling and batting performances. However, he dismissed the notion that the wicket of Tilak Varma was the turning point, acknowledging Varma’s aggressive style of play.
In addition to the on-field action, both teams have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate. India was fined 5% of their match fee for falling one over short of the minimum requirement, while the West Indies received a 10% fine for being two overs behind the stipulated rate.
The second T20I is now eagerly anticipated as both teams aim to bounce back and secure a crucial victory in the five-match series.
